New Year Goal Check-In with Carrie

In December we chatted to Coach Carrie about setting New Year’s goals. We’ve caught up with her again to get her advice on pushing through the winter, re-energising and sticking to our goals so we can smash 2022.

Carrie, how do you recommend we keep on top of those New Year’s goals we set a few weeks ago?

I find it super useful to schedule some time to have an accountability meeting. This can either be with yourself (if you trust yourself to follow through and hold yourself accountable) or with someone else. This could be anyone: a friend, mentor, family member or work colleague. You just need someone who can ask you how you are getting on, and maybe push you to reflect a little. If you’re doing it on your own, you could consider spending some time reflecting on what’s gone well and what could be improved on your journey to reaching your goals. Consider writing your thoughts down as it sometimes helps you reflect further.

After you’ve done that, you can decide if you need to change anything about your goals or your approach to your goals as you go forward.

It’s been really cold and dark the last few weeks, how do you stay motivated and energised when it’s a bit dark and dreary?

I’m lucky enough to love my job immensely so helping others to move is a huge motivational factor for me. When it comes to my own training, I try to listen to my body as best I can. I really recommend everyone does this too. Sometimes, you just need alone time at the gym to fill your cup. Other times, I love a cosy yoga session at home. I do also love booking in a group session to lift my energy by seeing some pals and socialising whilst getting that workout in. So it’s worth thinking about what works best for you, and acknowledging that sometimes that can differ depending on all sorts of circumstances! If you aren’t sure what works best, maybe just try out a few things. Trying new things, in general, is another great way to open up motivation and get that energy flowing through you!

When you are feeling a bit low or lacklustre, what is your favourite thing to do?

I love just getting into some baggy clothes, making a cup of tea and doing some Yin Yoga. To make it even more special and cosy, I love to light one of my favourite candles, which really lifts me.

If I can’t chill out at home, I’ll save a mobility workout for these days. If I’m not feeling up to a heavy training session, a mobility session is great as I can give my body that much needed TLC and it is still a really effective use of my workout time. I always feel rejuvenated after a mobility session and I notice the benefits of working on my mobility when I go into my heavier workouts.

If I’m in need of a big lift and energy boost, I can’t really go wrong with a big sweaty workout. Getting sweaty makes me feel a million bucks! Honestly! The sweatier the better. It might feel tough to get into, to begin with, but I always feel like I’ve really done something good for both my body and mind. I highly recommend it. There is also no better feeling than the shower that follows the post endorphin sweat!
