Happy International Yoga Day!

Celebrating International Yoga Day 2022 and sharing our favourite WithU yoga workouts.

Today is International Yoga Day 2022! As a company that believes in and promotes the benefits of yoga everyday through our app, we’re so excited to be marking this day. With its ability to ease everything from muscle aches to brain fog, yoga is an incredible wellness tool for everyday life, and what better time to shout about it than on today of all days!?

A brief history of yoga

Yoga has been around for thousands of years, with the first recorded beginnings of the practice reaching as far back as 5,000 years. Originating from Northern India, early yoga taught people the value that comes from sacrificing the ego, and focusing on self-reflection instead.

Since then, the practice has evolved to become a system of movement that works to restore the body and promote physical and mental wellness. This is the practice we best recognise today. Yoga’s principles blend seamlessly with our modern knowledge that to achieve true and well-rounded health, individuals need to focus on both their physical and mental well-being, and it’s this overlap that likely enabled the practice to become so popular around the world.

What benefits does it bring?

Regular yoga practice has countless benefits for both your physical and mental health – it can transform your state in more ways than one. Whether you’re in need of a reset, recovering from illness or injury, or simply in need of more balance in your daily routine, yoga could very well be the perfect fit.

In terms of your physical body, the practice can increase your flexibility and open up your joints, strengthen your muscles and protect you from injury, and it’s even been shown to aid your heart health. For your mental state, taking time out for yourself on the mat can promote relaxation and calm, offer a mode of stress management, provide mental clarity, and increase your energy. These are some pretty remarkable benefits!

How to get started in yoga

The beauty of yoga is that it can be practised by anyone, anywhere. All you need is yourself, a mat if you have one, a little bit of space, and you’re all set.

Let’s consider the primary different styles of yoga. Hatha which is typically slower moving and thus widely considered to be great for beginners; vinyasa tends to be faster-paced and a more challenging workout; iyengar focuses on proper alignment of your body and strengthens your muscles; and hot yoga, which is performed – you guessed it – in a hot environment, to really amp up the intensity for your cardiovascular system.

Everyone’s different, and everyone’s bodies are going to respond differently to the various styles of yoga out there. So, we suggest utilising trial and error when it comes to deciding which style is right for you. Try a few different sessions and see what you enjoy the most!
