Five top tips for kickstarting your fitness routine after a break

Make your break from fitness a thing of the past.

We hear you, sometimes life just gets in the way of your usual fitness routine. Anything from sickness to a full social calendar to a busy spell at the office can throw a spanner in the works. It can be tough to get back into a routine, but it doesn’t need to be an uphill battle. These are our favourite ways to get out of a slump and back into a routine.

1. Take it slow

Forget “go hard or go home”, and make sure to take it slow instead. Taking a break – no matter for how long – will inevitably result in a loss of fitness, strength, and flexibility, so it’s natural for things to feel harder when you return to working out. By taking it slowly, you’re less likely to feel overwhelmed or frustrated, and you’re more likely to keep the momentum going, to build back up to your previous fitness levels. Plus, taking it slow will reduce the risk of injury as you progress.

2. Buddy up

Getting yourself a workout buddy provides you with an accountability partner that’ll work wonders for keeping you on track and moving towards your goals. As well, it serves to make exercise a social event to look forward to, instead of a chore that needs to be ticked off your list.

3. Set yourself up for success

Maintaining a consistent workout routine is essentially maintaining a habit, and to make your habits as achievable as possible, you need to make them easy. By taking small steps such as laying your workout clothes out the night before, scheduling your sessions into your calendar, and choosing a movement style you like, you’ll make the process of getting in a workout that much easier.

4. Set goals

By setting goals, you’ll have a constant reminder of your “why” for exercising, which will help to keep you motivated on the days when you just can’t be bothered. Having a clear and defined set of goals – both long- and short-term – will give you something to work towards, to channel your energy into.

To ensure that you stay motivated and excited about stepping back into fitness, it’s worth setting realistic goals that you can clearly break down into actionable steps, rather than trying to reach your longest-term goal straight off the bat. The saying, “Rome wasn’t built in a day” feels particularly appropriate to bear in mind.

5. Celebrate the wins, no matter how small

It can be easy to get swept up in the “I’ll be happy when…” mentality with fitness, and while celebrating the big moments is important, don’t forget to celebrate the smaller wins as well! Making time to celebrate all your wins will give you a sense of achievement, and will keep your morale high as you tackle your next workout.
